Digital Eyecandy:

Package Design for a Wearable

What is Crucial, What is not.

Designing Packaging has always been a brain-scratching process. Deep planning needs to go into the text that appears on the six-sides of the box.

It's rare to find packaging today that has even one bare surface on any given side.

Information that is essential to a consumer electronic (CE) product box can include:

  • Name of the product

  • Company that built it

  • Image of the product inside or a transparent window into the product housed within.

  • Different regulatory qualifications and standard of quality it meets.

  • Core features

  • Technical Details

  • Copy-written product abstract

  • Company Website and Contact

  • Manufacturing information (Made in ___ )

  • QR Bar

  • Package Disposal Instructives

(Example Exantra Kickstarter Bundle Reward)

What is Digital, What is not.

Fortunately, I was not at the stage of manufacturing quite yet. The packaging I would be creating would serve as eye-candy and only as a preview of what kind of container Exantra's wearable would show up in.

This is not a physical package but a digital package; therefore, some information should be left out.

In this case, a bulk information which normally goes into a tangible product package would either be omitted or conveyed in a description paragraph aside from the concept package.

Information Remaining:

  • Name of the product

  • Company Name

  • Core Features

Figuring out Dimensions

Figuring out Text

for Your Box

Carrying a universal book would register in ones mind as a reference to the package's weight, height, width and depth.

The weight of Holy Bible would be too much and is at the heavier end.

There are two packages stacked on top of each other incase our customers buy one for their significant other.

Pair bundles were the most popular of our kickstarter backings.

Figuring out Content Placement within the Box

The Titan Link is estimated to be between 1.0 oz and 1.3 oz based on it's competitors weights.

My mobile phone spreads at 5.96 inches.

Having more than two slots for the components can be overwhelming. Better to keep it at two for a stronger wow factor than to risk detracting from the core experience.

Materializing the Box

It is pertinent to make sure our wearable pops once the package is unraveled.

The contrast of the wearable's stark black band will stand out against the metallic skin of the box.

Having the wearable get lost in the blend of colors would be tragic.

Sweet.
